Dürr Dental amalgam separators – safely comply with new regulatory requirements

Dental amalgam contains up to 50% of mercury and therefore must not be released into the environment. Dürr Dental amalgam separators reliably remove amalgam waste from your dental chair/unit waste water using a precision centrifugal device coupled with a hydrodynamic self-cleaning system to maintain high performance. Dürr Dental has been producing this equipment for nearly 30 years and easily surpasses the International Standard for Amalgam Separation (ISO 11143:2008) requiring at least 95% amalgam retention. Just as naturally, Dürr Dental offers a practical disposal concept for this. After separation, the amalgam is automatically fed into a collecting container. The container only needs to be replaced when the maximum filling amount has been reached. Disposal is subject to legal provisions and is carried out by authorized companies.

Unlike conventional sedimentation separators, Dürr Dental centrifugal systems feature a permanent fill level check. The container fill level is regularly monitored on every power cycle and during treatment. As soon as the maximum fill level is reached, a visual and audible alert signals the operator or assistant to replace the amalgam container or contact their authorized recycling service. Only then must the container be replaced. This procedure prevents unnecessary additional expense, thus saving costs. The convenient lever mechanism also makes removal of the container easier. The high amalgam separation rate of more than 98% complies with all legal requirements. As an example, the CAS 1 amalgam separator for integration into dental treatment units exceeds regulatory requirements with a separation rate of more than 99% (ISO 11143:2008) and is therefore a future-proof choice.

Separation systems are available for all sizes of clinics and are fitted downstream of the dental suction unit. This way there is absolutely no loss of suction power by the amalgam separator. Separators integrated directly into suction systems may reduce suction power. Thanks to the software Tyscor Pulse the current status of the monitored systems are always in view. The software automatically informs about pending maintenance tasks, such as the replacement of the amalgam collecting vessel. In the case of a fault, Tyscor Pulse displays if the fault can be rectified by the practice personnel, or offers the possibility to directly inform the service technician via mail. The technician can then start looking for a solution via a remote maintenance function.

How can I retain mercury from amalgam waste?
By fitting an ISO 11143:2008 certified amalgam separator. There are options for single chair and multi-chair installations utilizing central or individual amalgam separators from Dürr Dental. This should be discussed with your local authorized Dürr Dental sales consultant and service technician.

How is it recycled?
Once the canister is returned to an authorized recycler, the recycler makes sure that the contents are reprocessed in accordance with the actual regulatory requirements.

What are the types of amalgam separator systems does Dürr Dental offer?

CAS 1: the integrated solution
The CAS 1 Combi-Separator from Dürr Dental is a valuable supplement to a lot of treatment units. It features a separation rate of more than 99% (ISO 11143:2008) and is therefore a future-proof choice. It operates quietly and offers a powerful brushless DC drive that easily copes with hour-long treatments and large amounts of fluid. Two-stage separation effectively prevents blood foam from being carried along during aspiration, thus protecting the dry suction unit connected downstream to the chair. The two-stage system with cyclone separator and dynamic separation turbine attains a much higher separation performance than traditional methods and can hardly be heard during operation. CAS 1 separators are suitable for many treatment units and often are already installed by leading treatment unit manufacturers ex works.

CA 1 / CA 2 / CA 4: The flexible, modular solution
CA separators can be installed without interference into the suction path. The CA 1 with housing is perfectly suitable for retrofitting a dry dental unit with very little changes of the unit itself. The CA 2 separator is optimized for use with a VS 300, VS 600 or Tyscor VS 2 suction unit for two operators. The CA 4 separator is simply installed downstream of a VS 900 or VS 1200 suction system for 4 operators. All CA systems work according to the centrifugal principle with hydrodynamic self-cleaning and are switched on automatically as soon as waste water from the treatment unit is entering the separator. A visual display provides information on the current operating condition at all times.
