Nomination for Dürr Dental with Mercy Ships

Dürr Dental AG from Bietigheim-Bissingen (Germany) has been supporting the work of aid organisation Mercy Ships for 15 years. This commitment was recognised at the 10th Lea SME Social Responsibility Award in Baden-Württemberg on 5 July 2016 at the New Palace in Stuttgart.

The tenth "Lea SME Award for Social Responsibility in Baden-Württemberg" was awarded to small and medium-sized businesses on 5 July in Stuttgart. The abbreviation Lea stands for the German Leistung (performance), Engagement (commitment) and Anerkennung (recognition). The prize is awarded by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing of Baden-Württemberg together with the two charity organizations, Caritas and Diakonie of the Catholic and Protestant Church respectively, in recognition of the social commitment of small and medium-sized companies. The nominated companies - chosen from among 307 applications - included DÜRR DENTAL AG from Bietigheim-Bissingen.

"Social responsibility is a particular concern of ours. We are primarily involved in the field of healthcare. We support Mercy Ships at an international level and as a commitment to our region, we also focus on supporting local sports teams", explains Martin Dürrstein, Chairman of the Executive Board, after the presentation.

The medical technology specialist from Bietigheim in Germany has been involved with the Mercy Ships aid organization in particular for 15 years. Mercy Ships was founded in 1978 and runs the largest hospital ship in Africa, the Africa Mercy. Urgently-needed, specialist surgical procedures are carried out on board by Mercy Ships. In addition, support is provided for the healthcare systems in the host countries in the form of professional training courses. Every year around 1,600 volunteers from over 40 nations work on the ship with its 400-strong crew.

The family-run company provides the aid organization with products for its mobile dental surgeries. In addition, the campaign, called "A New Smile for Africa", has already been run several times. In order to help improve the dental health situation in Western Africa, the company donates dental treatments for products that are sold. And information evenings are held to motivate more dentists and their teams to work on board the Africa Mercy. A benefit evening with business partners recently also helped to raise EUR 70,000 in donations to Mercy Ships.

In addition to the thousands of free and often complex operations that are carried out on board the ship, Mercy Ships also carries out necessary development projects in conjunction with local partners in nearby villages. So as well as vital medical help, the organization provides relief supplies and local development aid in the region to enable long-term and sustainable change in the countries it visits.
