Frequently asked questions
FAQ: Special areas
Unpleasant odors in suction systems are often caused by biofilm as well as by deposits of saliva, blood, and organic matter in the lines.
We recommend a two-step approach:
- Cleaning
A special detergent such as MD 555 cleaner can help remove deposits and biofilm. - Disinfection
A suitable disinfectant such as Orotol plus is then used to reliably inactivate microorganisms.
Pro tip: Using Orotol plus daily (at least at the end of each working day) and performing regular intensive cleaning using MD 555 cleaner (e.g. at least twice a week) can help prevent odors. If odours are particularly strong, additional intensive cleaning may also be advisable. Regular maintenance and rinsing help maintain the hygiene, proper functioning, and value of the suction system.
Clogging is often caused by prophy powder, tartar, and/or a combination of these with organic materials such as saliva and blood.
Procedure:
- Mechanical inspection and cleaning
Check the filters, screens or amalgam cartridge and clean them if necessary. - Chemical cleaning
Draw a solution containing MD 555 cleaner into the suction system in accordance with manufacturer information to dislodge inorganic deposits (e.g. prophy powder). - Rinsing
Rinse the lines thoroughly with water until all residue has been removed. - Disinfection
Then disinfect with Orotol plus to inactivate microorganisms.
Important: Do not use any strong acids or household cleaning products. These can damage materials and sensitive components of the suction system or dental equipment.
Maintaining proper hygiene in suction systems involves daily disinfection and regular intensive cleaning. These two measures serve different purposes.
Daily disinfection
Objective: To reduce the presence of germs and remove organic residues (e.g. saliva, blood, biofilm)
Product example: Orotol plus
Use: 1 to 2 times per day, at least at the end of the working day
Regular cleaning
Objective: Removal of inorganic deposits (e.g. prophy powder, tartar)
Product example: MD 555 cleaner
Use: at least twice a week for intensive cleaning of the suction system components
Basic principle: Daily disinfection and regular cleaning help prevent infection, maintain the value of the system, and ensure proper functioning
Orotol plus is a disinfectant developed for dental suction systems that inactivates microorganisms while remaining gentle on materials.
Variants:
Orotol plus
Orotol plus pH 7
Use (example with OroCup maintenance system):
- Rinse the suction system with water to remove any coarse debris
- Dilute the Orotol plus concentrate with cold water in the OroCup in accordance with manufacturer information
- Draw the solution into the system using the OroCup maintenance system
- Observe exposure time according to the operating instructions
- Use daily, at least at the end of the working day
Note: For the product to be effective and to ensure it is compatible with the material, it must be used in accordance with manufacturer information.
To ensure the hygienic and safe reprocessing of suction systems, two types of product are generally required: a cleaner to remove deposits and a disinfectant to reduce bacteria.
Example of a two-step approach:
MD 555 cleaner For thorough cleaning and the removal of stubborn inorganic deposits (e.g. prophy powder, tartar)
Orotol plus for disinfection and the inactivation of microorganisms, as well as for the removal of organic residues (e.g. saliva, blood)
Important: Use products suitable for the intended medical purpose and observe the manufacturer information.
Cleaning and disinfection serve different purposes and are effective against different types of contamination:
Acidic detergent (e.g. MD 555 cleaner)
Removes inorganic deposits such as prophy powder, prophy paste, tartar, impression material or plaque disclosing agents.
Disinfectant (e.g. Orotol plus)
Inactivates microorganisms and helps remove organic deposits from the lines.
Together, they form a coordinated approach: inorganic deposits are removed, while microbial contamination is reduced through disinfection. This helps to maintain the hygiene, proper functioning, and value of the suction system.
Cleaning and disinfectant products work in different ways and complement each other.
MD 555 cleaner
As an acidic cleaner, it dissolves inorganic deposits such as tartar or prophy powder, helping to remove them from the line system. Breaking up deposits can also improve flow rate.
Orotol plus
Contains antimicrobial substances that inactivate bacterial, viral, and yeast contaminants. At the same time, the product helps remove organic contaminants such as saliva and blood without unnecessarily damaging materials.
Result: The combination of cleaning and disinfection helps keep lines clean, reduce biofilm formation, minimise the risk of infection, and maintain the long-term value of the suction system.
The frequency depends on usage, wear and tear, and the manufacturer information for the products used.
Recommended routine:
Daily
Disinfect all lines and spittoons with Orotol plus at least once daily, after the practice closes.
At least twice a week
Intensive cleaning with MD 555 cleaner, including cleaning of the screens and accessible components.
Additionally as required
If visible deposits, odours or increased contamination are detected, unscheduled cleaning and disinfection should be carried out. In cases of stubborn contamination, intensive cleaning with a longer contact time may be advisable, in accordance with the operating instructions.
General rule: Regular cleaning helps protect patients, staff, and equipment.
Maintaining the value of the system and ensuring material compatibility depend on the use of compatible products and strict adherence to application guidelines.
Value preservation
Regular cleaning with MD 555 cleaner reduces deposits that can lead to malfunctions. Subsequent disinfection with Orotol plus helps ensure hygienic safety and minimises microbial contamination.
Material compatibility
Orotol plus and MD 555 cleaner are recommended by leading treatment unit manufacturers and are gentle on lines, tubes and valves. During use, concentration, application time, and proper adherence to rinsing steps are crucial.
Avoid
Home remedies, corrosive acids and unauthorised disinfectants can cause corrosion, material fatigue or damage to lines, tubes and valves.
The individual components require different cleaning procedures:
Suction hoses
Wipe down all outer surfaces after each patient. Draw air and a solution of disinfectant or detergent into the system daily, as well as during weekly intensive cleaning. Observe the required contact time, then rinse thoroughly with water.
Suction handpieces
Reprocess after each patient in accordance with the established hygiene protocol.
Filter
Change disposable filters once a week. Check the suction system filters regularly, e.g. every three months, and maintain or replace them in accordance with manufacturer information.
Regular checks of all components help to ensure that the entire system operates safely.
Effectiveness depends largely on the correct application.
MD 555 cleaner
Observe the application time specified by the manufacturer, e.g. 30–120 minutes, or alternatively 5–15 minutes depending on the method of application. Then rinse thoroughly with water.
Orotol plus
Observe the minimum application time of 5 minutes. The line surfaces must be completely wetted, e.g. by using the OroCup maintenance system.
Safety considerations
Wear personal protective equipment (PPE). Do not mix these products with other chemicals. Ensure sufficient ventilation. Do not use detergents and disinfectants one after the other to avoid potential neutralisation.
Adhering to the operating instructions protects staff, patients, and equipment.
The right choice depends on the material, the level of contamination, and the manufacturer information.
Wipe-down disinfection (after each treatment)
FD 322Use FD 333, FD 333 forte, or FD 366 sensitive for disinfecting inner and outer surfaces.
Removal of inorganic deposits
MD 555 cleaner At least twice a week.
Daily disinfection
Orotol plus At least at the end of each working day.
As required
MD 550 To remove discolouration and gently clean and disinfect the spittoon.
Wipes or brushes
Use disposable materials or thoroughly disinfect reusable equipment after each use.
The product should always be used in accordance with manufacturer information.
The amalgam separator and filters are usually cleaned and disinfected automatically when Orotol plus is introduced into the suction system via the OroCup maintenance system.
In addition, the components should be inspected regularly and maintained or replaced in accordance with the manufacturer information.
A properly functioning suction system can be assessed based on several criteria:
Suction power
The suction power remains stable and does not decrease.
Visual inspection
Screens, spittoons and suction hoses are free from visible deposits.
Odour control
There are no unpleasant odours.
Regular checks help to detect deposits or malfunctions at an early stage.
In the event of a malfunction, follow a structured approach:
- Switch off the devices and disconnect them from the power supply, if necessary.
- Perform a visual inspection of hoses, filters and screens.
- If the malfunction persists, contact a service technician through the relevant dental depot or the manufacturer.
Do not attempt to repair safety-critical components yourself.
